The growing popularity of modular synthesizers around the globe has generated renewed excitement and interest in the "West Coast style" of synthesis, which departs from traditional synthesis conventions. The compact body of the volca modular features eight independent analog synth modules and 50 patch points, allowing users to explore the fundamentals of modular synthesis while leveraging the renowned features of the volca synthesizer line to control a unique and distinct flavor of analog sounds.

The volca modular is an analog synth composed of interconnected modules. Its eight modules have been carefully selected to ensure standalone completeness, with internal connections that enable sound production even before connecting the included patch cables. The routing of these connections is visually represented by white lines on the panel. When patch cables are used, they take priority over the internal connections, bypassing them.

At the heart of the volca modular is a triangle VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) carrier and a modulator. The complex overtones generated by FM (Frequency Modulation) modulation are then sent through a wave folder circuit, adding additional overtones and producing a distinctive West Coast-style sound.
